So here I go, ready to dive into Internet marketing and there is a long laundry list of things to do and learn.  The first thing I recognize is that I don’t have a website, I don’t know how to make one, but I know I need to get one to market on the Internet.  After a few hours of searching the Internet and reading various articles  from blogs and forums, i find out that I need a domain name and a web host.

A Domain Name is the Internet address that we type into the address bar.   It is actually called a URL which stands for (Universal Resource Locator)  makes sense  because its used to locate a specific web page.  The http:// (Hypertext Transfer Protocol)   is just the type of information being transferred.   Jon-Bennett is the second level domain, or part of your address.  Dot com (.com) is the top level domain.  Another part of your address.  Think of it like a  street address  the numbers then the street name.  I found out that there are many top level domains (.us, .ws, .biz, .uk, .gov, .edu, etc…) and they all mean something different. The .com stands for commercial business site, and is the most widely used.

Here is a tool you can use to check for domains.

A Web Host provides the space  on a server where you upload your web pages for others to view.  The host provides web tools, support, and continuous connectivity to the Internet 24/7.

I learned that there are many web hosting companies out there.  They all offer different rates for their hosting services and they all register domain names.  To narrow down the choices i did a google search for the oldest web hosting companies and the top 10 web hosting companies.  I also looked at the hosting companies other marketers referred as well.  I found that 1and1 is one of the oldest hosting companies and Hostgator is one of the hottest hosting companies.  I am using each of them because they are very affordable for a beginner.

The cool thing about learning the basics is that there is a ton of information provided by these companies in tutorials to make it easy to start.  There is also a lot of information online to reference as well.  So equipped with a domain name and a hosting company  I am ready to forge ahead on my Internet marketing journey.  Next step finding my niche and creating websites.
